2026-01-28 — Multi-Project Refinement Day

51 unique sessions, 406 total messages spanning two major focus areas: Hologram Discord bot feature polish, and exploratory work on a new Godot project.

Projects & Focus

Hologram (Primary)

Concentrated activity on Discord bot handler refinements and command improvements. The dominant theme was minimizing the bot's awareness of being a "character" and improving interaction models.

Key Improvements:

  • Handler.ts terminology shift: removed "Multiple characters" / "character" references to prevent LLM realization of system architecture
  • Prompting & response handling: allow freeform multi-character responses beyond strict <char1></char1> format
  • Command infrastructure: removed deprecated slash command aliases (/v, /e, /b, /ub) and their remnants
  • Status reporting: refactored /info commands to show server bindings, /bind and /unbind guidance
  • Context truncation: improved "... (elided) ..." output to only appear when necessary to hit ~2k character limits
  • /reset command: implemented to exclude messages older than invocation from LLM context
  • Tool descriptions: refactored tool call descriptions to be self-documenting rather than relying on explicit prompts
  • Model defaults: updated from gemini-2.0 to google:gemini-3-flash-preview

Prompt & Logic Fixes:

  • Why /forget made bots stop replying (fixed)
  • Reply condition logic: allow default replies when replied_to === name
  • Recursive call limit investigation
  • Message history defaults increased
  • Macro system: added char and user substitution alongside existing entity: (double-brace template syntax)
  • Better bind/unbind filtering: whitelist and blacklist now respect channel/server/user scope
  • db entry validation errors ([50035] Invalid Form Body on /view)

private-recipient-a (Supabase/Writing Assessment)

Active session around NAPLAN assessment integration. Discussions centered on:

  • Test visibility and year-level gating
  • NAPLAN prompt handling and generation
  • Writing sample evaluation and scoring
  • Admin panel features (waitlist management, rubric access)
  • Navigation flow between mock test pages and result screens
  • Theme/color issues (white text invisible in light mode)
  • Paste/grammarly restrictions in chat input

Observations:

  • Questions about past NAPLAN result retrieval and viewing workflows
  • Debate about page organization (should mock-test and mock-test-feedback be separate?)
  • Writing rubric scoring and how feedback is delivered to students

Moue (Godot Project)

Evening exploratory work (20:00+) on a new Godot project. Three agent sessions focused on understanding:

  • Project structure and Godot version detection
  • AssetsSource directory composition
  • Writing a CLAUDE.md for the project

Pattern: Classic "new project discovery" — examining project.godot, file structures, and determining appropriate tooling/documentation baseline.

Pad (Infrastructure)

Minimal but noted activity:

  • Lua/LuaJIT application refinement
  • flake.lock and Nix environment setup
  • Daemon vs. interactive REPL mode discussion
  • Event table logging for pad command invocations

Patterns & Approach

Rapid iteration over design: Multiple sessions show quick fix→commit→push cycles, suggesting high confidence in small, focused changes.

Question-driven work: Many sessions open with a specific bug report or clarification question ("why does X happen?") followed by targeted exploration and implementation.

Agent warmups: Large batch of agent sessions in afternoon/evening with "Warmup" messages — likely a test or orchestration pattern for launching parallel work.

Hologram dominates: Clear asymmetry — Hologram has 20+ real work sessions vs. 3-4 for other projects, reflecting a focus on getting the Discord bot experience right before broader ecosystem work.

Session Characteristics

  • Early start: 05:11 UTC (debugging session on hologram error)
  • Distributed throughout day: Peak activity 07:00-09:00 UTC, then 14:00-16:00 UTC
  • Late evening pivot: Shift to Godot/moue exploration at 19:50+ UTC
  • Short sessions typical: Most sessions 3-5 turns before /exit, indicating quick feedback loops
  • High commit frequency: Almost every session ended with "commit?" → approval → push

The day shows a mature debugging rhythm: spot an issue, discuss briefly, implement, commit, push. Minimal rework needed, suggesting either very familiar codebases or good test/review coverage.

Token Usage

Daily totals: 929K input tokens, 10.4M output tokens, 3.0B cache read, 90M cache create — 3.09B total tokens across all turns.

Top 5 sessions by output:

  • 7ce416ac: 2.43M output tokens | 96.2% cache hit ratio (433M cache_read, 17M cache_create)
  • 117e8a69: 1.84M output tokens | 97.1% cache hit ratio (673M cache_read, 20M cache_create)
  • 37db25c7: 767K output tokens | 98.2% cache hit ratio (279M cache_read, 5M cache_create)
  • ab397ae5: 547K output tokens | 95.2% cache hit ratio (160M cache_read, 8M cache_create)
  • 73be70e7: 530K output tokens | 97.7% cache hit ratio (136M cache_read, 3M cache_create)

Overall cache efficiency: 97.1% hit ratio across the day indicates strong prompt caching benefits, with most sessions reusing previously cached context rather than regenerating it. The heaviest sessions (7ce416ac, 117e8a69) show consistent cache reuse, though 7ce416ac had the largest cache_create footprint (17M tokens), suggesting it established new cached patterns for later sessions.
