2026-02-14: GML Correctness Sprint + Twine/SugarCube Ramp-Up

Day at a glance

83 sessions, 325 user messages across reincarnate (60 sessions, 290 messages) and other projects. Heavy focus on GML decompiler bug fixes (Bounty project) and Twine/SugarCube pipeline bootstrapping (multiday sprint continuation). Both tracks ran in parallel throughout the day.

Two major threads

1. GML Decompiler Correctness — Bounty (Game Maker project)

Early morning through afternoon: systematic bug hunting and fixing in the reincarnate GML frontend. Pattern: load reference gamemaker output (~/git/bounty/), compare against decompiled output (~/Bounty/out/), identify runtime errors, fix the IR/lowering logic.

Bugs addressed:

  • Global variable access fix — GML scripts were emitting global.field instead of self.field. Fixed by changing the semantic context for script execution.
  • Global variable type inference — Post-fix, all global accesses needed type inference since they came through at runtime. Added inference logic.
  • variable_global_get/set optimization — Replaced function call pattern with direct property access (global.x).
  • GML argument[N] parameter access bug — Functions accessing argument0, argument1 etc. produced completely wrong comparisons. Root cause: parameter binding wasn't connecting to the argument array. Major fix.
  • Loop counter initialization — repeat(N) loops generated infinite loops because the counter variable was being replaced by its initial value during constant folding. Needed escape analysis in promote_single_store().
  • GML const folding regression — fold_single_use_consts was incorrectly folding loop-carried variables.
  • Sprite constant resolution — sprite_index field defaults should resolve to named constants in output.

Operational note: Multiple sessions ran GML backlog items in parallel. User kept asking "what's next?" and picking items from the TODO list. Session workflow: spawn new session, "Implement the following plan: [plan from TODO.md]", execute, commit, loop.

Test coverage gap discovered: Several bugs weren't caught by existing tests. Sessions were asking "is this a regression?" after finding issues. Discussion about adversarial tests and whether test coverage is sufficient.

2. Twine/SugarCube Pipeline — Multi-Day Sprint

Parallel thread starting mid-morning, continuing through evening (well into 2026-02-15). Frontend bootstrap → runtime implementation → e2e verification.

Progress:

  • SugarCube parser — Achieved 97.4% parse rate on Degrees of Lewdity (10,029 passages, 258 errors) and 97.9% on TRC (2,819 passages, 60 errors). Remaining errors are edge cases (inline macros, tricky arg handling).
  • AST → IR translation — Core logic complete. FunctionBuilder + core IR fit Twine's passage/variable model.
  • Runtime bootstrap — Twine/SugarCube runtime moved from "entirely console-based" to actual UI. Implemented wikification, link setter behavior, passage rendering, dialog system.
  • Stylesheet + asset handling — User stylesheets now extracted and linked in runtime.
  • Package.json generation — Made configurable/serializable instead of hardcoded.
  • Platform layer architecture — Discussion about splitting monolithic platform layers (dialog, save-ui, settings-ui) into per-concern modules. Question raised: should they be independently swappable? User pushed back on module composition assumptions in CLAUDE.md.

Blocker discovered: Context overflow across sessions. Multiple sessions noted "This session is being continued from a previous conversation that ran out of context." Workaround: session summaries at handoff.

Scaling issues: Performance regression found — cfg-simplify and DCE taking 29s+ on widget_radio_listen (27,734 blocks, 101,441 instructions). O(n²) block scanning suspected. User created debugging flags CLI to dump post-transform IR and structurized shapes.

Reference projects: Degrees of Lewdity (DoL) and TRC being used as live test cases. User kept checking "how much is left before this is all runnable e2e?" — driving toward full pipeline validation.

Patterns observed

Rapid context switching: User spawns multiple parallel sessions on the same epic (normalize extraction, Twine pipeline) rather than blocking on one. Each session gets a focused plan, executes it, commits, reports back. Allows parallel progress on interdependent tasks.

Error-driven development: Bug discovery comes from running recompiled output (Bounty) and comparing against reference. No hypothetical reasoning — load the artifacts, spot the error, trace it back to the IR/lowering logic.

Documentation friction: Multiple questions about where things should live (manifests in ~/reincarnate/wherever/, demo projects at ~/reincarnate/twine/). User asking to document assumptions more clearly in CLAUDE.md (especially around module isolation rules).

Performance becoming visible: First major performance concern surfaced (O(n²) block scanning). Timing instrumentation was briefly added, then reverted. Suggests scale of projects being compiled is increasing (27K+ blocks).

Test coverage skepticism: User questioning "is this a regression?" multiple times when discovering bugs. Not confident tests catch things. Suggests test suite needs expansion and/or more adversarial cases.

Commits

Focused, incremental commits across both tracks. GML bug fixes typically single-issue, Twine changes tend to be larger refactors (bootstrap phases, runtime stubs, package.json serialization).

Mood

Productive day. User was directive and comfortable with rapid spawning of parallel work. Some frustration with context limits on long sessions. Caught scaling issues early (perf) and architecture questions (platform module isolation) that suggest system is becoming more complex.

Token Usage

Daily totals: 932,122 tokens across 83 sessions and 325 user messages (input: 68,507 | output: 863,615 | cache_read: 609,845,386 | cache_create: 13,791,446 | grand total: 624.6M).

Cache efficiency: Exceptional — 97.8% cache hit ratio (609.8M read vs 13.8M created). This reflects the pattern of spawning parallel sessions on the same epic: shared context (Twine IR, GML semantics, test artifacts) gets loaded once, then reused across 83 distinct sessions.

Top 10 sessions by output tokens:

  1. c093eb89 — 48.9K tokens (3 turns, 98.9% cache ratio)
  2. 49875782 — 47.3K tokens (6 turns, 97.7% cache ratio)
  3. 2a01fd34 — 38.7K tokens (9 turns, 98.5% cache ratio)
  4. 9eafc62b — 38.5K tokens (4 turns, 97.9% cache ratio)
  5. 7cf78e83 — 36.9K tokens (4 turns, 98.0% cache ratio)
  6. f90e75ec — 34.3K tokens (9 turns, 97.5% cache ratio)
  7. cba51d68 — 30.1K tokens (3 turns, 97.4% cache ratio)
  8. 523ebe1e — 28.8K tokens (4 turns, 98.4% cache ratio)
  9. 35abf860 — 27.9K tokens (9 turns, 98.8% cache ratio)
  10. 7ac181da — 25.8K tokens (12 turns, 98.3% cache ratio)

Pattern: Short, focused sessions (2–4 turns each) are typical. The longest session (7d4a4359) ran 20 turns but still maintained 96.1% cache ratio. No outliers with poor cache efficiency — lowest among major sessions is 96.1%, suggesting context reuse is working as designed.
