Daily Log: 2026-06-23

A heavy user-directed day across five distinct threads plus the autonomous layer. The day's register is design-under-skepticism: nearly every session is the user drilling into a foundational question — "what is our primitive set," "how do slices compose," "is this typechecker even possible" — and rejecting plausible-but-shallow answers until a principled model lands. Two threads broke into implementation (private-recipient-b composition, aeriea's 3D-visual pivot); three stayed in deep design (crescent typechecker, unshape UI, the new TTRPG sidequest). Fuwafuwa ran its autonomous Discord/Moltbook loop underneath (31 sessions).

Sessions and Activity

private-recipient-b (business-automation substrate)

The continuation of the operational/library-first arc: the central question this session is composition — how do the project's "slices" compose into a whole app without violating encapsulation. The user pushed hard against every framing that didn't survive scrutiny:

  • Interrogated the projection package layout (apps/web, apps/worker, apps/cli — what package, how namespaced), deleted an orphan, and questioned whether the event-stream model is the right shape ("what is the usecase/purpose of an event stream").
  • Drove a sustained encapsulation critique: "still not convinced our 'slices' are particularly well quarantined from each other… how the fuck do normal microservices architectures do it," then proposed and tested ideas (AOP, DIP) only to reject principle-led reasoning outright: "maybe stop relying on principles. obviously our composition story is a disaster. why?"
  • Looked outward for real-world grounding (wasp.sh, real modular codebases) but warned against copying models whose goals differ: "we shouldn't necessarily steal models without thinking whether our goals are 100% identical."
  • Demanded the design be statically enforceable and regression-proof: "is it possible to statically enforce invariants?" / "if we can regress at all, we WILL shoot ourselves in the foot." Eventually authorized "start all phases" while flagging the risk of "yet more spinning wheels."
  • Late in the session converged on the concrete encapsulation mechanism: "why. do. slices. violate. encapsulation." → "HOW do we eliminate foreign reads" → "yeah let's proceed."

Committed: a design artifact capturing the business-combinators core, a contract-primitive engine decision, model artifacts, and execution threads.

Observations: This is the same library-first / composition-honesty thread from early June, now at its hardest point — the composition story was named "a disaster" and rebuilt around eliminating foreign reads across slices with statically-enforced invariants. Highest-output session of the day (~1.4M output tokens, 402 tool calls, 122 turns).

aeriea (embodied sandbox — "a place to be")

The "place to be, not a game to play" thread reached an inflection: the engine pivoted from pure-text toward a 3D visual channel. The arc of the day:

  • Restated the non-negotiable quality bar: "your bar to beat is roleplay with opus 4.8… anything less than opus quality is unacceptable" — while holding the hard constraint "i don't want LLM in the loop at all." The contradiction (zero runtime neural inference vs. Opus-quality prose) was named explicitly and the cop-out responses ("force users to use the most expensive model") were rejected sharply.
  • Repeatedly rejected low-quality "telling not showing" prose as the implementation target.
  • The hot-take pivot: "why are we a pure text engine in the first place" → evaluated 3D as the "showing" channel. Considered Free Cities/pregmod (3D as display option), rejected 2D spritesheets ("kinda suck ngl, it's not the 1960s anymore"), and landed on committing to quality 3D as the showing channel.
  • Discovered and cloned an open-license 3D paperdoll foundation (a 3D successor to a side-view-dolls project), reorienting away from an earlier 2D-adoption slant that was "now wrong."

Committed work this day was body-rendering correctness: normals computed correct-by-construction on base topology, normals welded across UV seams + tangents added, canonical forward axis + first-person eye-forward, facial proxy deltas rebuilt against the full macro set, plus a free-fly creator camera (WASD/Space/Ctrl, orbit pivot centered on body) and code-grounded defect diagnosis across surfaces.

Observations: aeriea moved from a code-free design dialogue (per the May synthesis) into real implementation with a concrete visual foundation. The "Opus-quality without LLM-in-the-loop" tension remains the project's central unresolved constraint.

crescent (LuaJIT ecosystem — typechecker)

A long, candid session re-litigating why the Lua typechecker keeps having to be rebuilt. This is the most reflective thread of the day — the user openly questioning the entire approach rather than directing implementation:

  • "i can't see all this iteration ending/converging, like, ever" / "why has it been so many months and we still don't have a proper typechecker" / "are all the other typechecker iterations useless?"
  • Examined the trilemma directly: "Maximally powerful + sound + full inference is a trilemma… you sail into undecidability." Rejected adjacent solutions — luau ("isn't even lua"), Teal/Cyan tooling — as not the target.
  • Named the goal precisely: "a typechecker that's functionally complete, sota levels of usefulness, and lasts 100 years. like luajit and sqlite levels of stability." Rejected tests as the safety mechanism: "tests are cure not prevention… blind exactly where nobody looked."
  • The session's turn: an oracle model (run code on real LuaJIT, compare against checker verdicts) and then a decisive move toward a proof assistant ("i think that's enough time avoiding using a proof assistant"; discussed Lean as a "safe to rely on" host). Closed with the direction to autonomously, indefinitely extend the proof-assistant model toward a full one with adversarial audits, stopping only if user input becomes necessary.

Committed: proof work on metatable metamethods (__newindex, __call, binary operators).

Observations: This is the crescent-v5 "build it twice / prove it" arc from the May synthesis taken to its logical end — the user concluding that example-based tests can't deliver the 100-year-stable checker they want, and reaching for mechanized proof. Notable as a thread where the user repeatedly told the agent it was being unhelpful and overconfident, and the decision (proof assistant) emerged from that pressure rather than from agent advocacy.

unshape (procedural generation) + wick/expression-language naming

Two intertwined threads. First, a UI thread: the user wants an editor for unshape, "beyond sota" in both capability and UX, and pushed back hard on performative design ("did you even review the design instead of blindly following my suggestions"; "did you get agents to design actual good ux instead of performatively approving existing ux"). The substantive UX insight that emerged: mode belongs to the slot, not the node or the editor — rejecting "one mode per node" as "fucking stupid" while also rejecting "everything has every mode" as bad for the user's mental model, and questioning blessing any single representation (node-graph vs. nested stack vs. formula) as canonical.

Second, a naming thread triggered by discovering the crate name wick is taken on crates.io (postdating the project's own use). Candidates weighed — seelie (rejected: "doesn't evoke one expression lowered to many targets"; leaks whimsy not rigor; gacha-search shadow) and the original dew (conveys the desired smallness, but availability on crates.io was the blocker; investigated the existing dew crate's ownership). Shelved as bikeshedding to get to "the actual code stuff." Refactor work on the day included vector-type validity (vec2×vec2 becoming valid) and rejecting a low-quality error message as not production-ready.

Observations: unshape is widening from a core library toward an editor surface. The "mode belongs to the slot" realization is the load-bearing design output. The wick rename is an open thread (no name chosen — per house rules, the conceptual space was refined, not resolved).

TTRPG sidequest (new thread)

A new, lighthearted thread spun up from a house-style "bad ideas" prompt: a cultivation-themed TTRPG system. The user noticed the gap ("How is there [an existing] TTRPG before a cultivation-centered TTRPG") and explored mechanics — cultivation pathways instead of classes (dao/qi/body cultivators, alchemists), an overdraw mechanic, the irreversible-ratchet realm model (qualitative phase-changes through gated breakthroughs, "the one-way climb, not a bar that refills"), accessibility of techniques.

This connected to a corpus-extraction experiment run from github-io: mining a xianxia book corpus (/mnt/ssd/books/xianxia/) to ground the mechanics in primary text. The session probed extraction cost/quality empirically — fan-out agents reading ~70M input tokens, model-tier tradeoffs (rejected Opus-only at "$210 just for extraction"; tested Haiku/Sonnet recall against an Opus ceiling via semantic-match scoring), and chunk-size/slicing experiments (staggered/random slicing) to get approximate completeness numbers given even Opus isn't exhaustive. The recall measurements were striking — Sonnet ~42–64% and Haiku ~31–47% of Opus-extracted mechanics per chunk, with cheaper tiers reliably catching the load-bearing power-system spine but dropping cross-referenced subsystems and economic/governance strata.

Committed (in the TTRPG repo): a modular cultivation TTRPG system scaffold + stubbed validation harness, then mechanics grounded in a 22-book primary-text corpus. The agents were directed to write findings down themselves.

Observations: A genuine sidequest, but it doubled as a real evaluation of multi-tier LLM extraction recall on a large corpus — useful data for any ecosystem extraction pipeline (the "LLM as oracle at the leaves" pattern, measured rather than assumed).

fuwafuwa (autonomous)

31 sessions on 2026-06-23, the standard autonomous Discord/Moltbook monitoring loop (session start → check channels/DMs → respond if warranted → sleep → repeat → end). No user-directed messages and no tool-call instrumentation captured for these sessions — consistent with the autonomous routine's lightweight, system-driven shape. Sits at the higher post-spike baseline established in the May synthesis.

Cache hit ratios (cache_read : output) are extremely high on the deep-design sessions — private-recipient-b ~99:1, aeriea ~104:1, unshape ~77:1, crescent ~78:1 — reflecting long single-session design dialogues against heavily-loaded project context. These are the period's signature multi-turn, low-fresh-input, high-reuse sessions.

Observations

  1. The day's unifying register is foundational skepticism. Four of five user-directed threads are the user refusing a shallow answer and forcing a principled one: composition/encapsulation (private-recipient-b), the typechecker's very feasibility (crescent), what a node-editor's primitives even are (unshape), and the text-vs-3D channel question (aeriea). The recurring user move is "the fuck? / why. / HOW." — escalating pressure until the model stops pattern-matching and reasons from the goal.

  2. Two threads reached for stronger correctness substrates. private-recipient-b moved toward statically-enforced invariants against regression ("if we can regress at all, we WILL shoot ourselves in the foot"); crescent moved toward a proof assistant after concluding example-based tests can't deliver a 100-year-stable checker. Both are the ecosystem's "soundness before features / validate against reality" principle hardening into mechanism.

  3. aeriea crossed from design into implementation with a concrete 3D visual foundation, while keeping its central tension open: Opus-quality output with zero LLM in the runtime loop.

  4. The TTRPG sidequest produced real measurement, not just play — a multi-tier extraction-recall study (Opus ceiling vs. Sonnet/Haiku) on a large corpus, with cost and chunk-slicing experiments. This is the "LLM as oracle at the leaves" pattern being empirically characterized.

  5. Naming surfaced as a real blocker for the expression-language project (the wick crate name is taken upstream). Per house rules the conceptual space was explored (dew, seelie) without a forced choice — left open.

  6. User engagement is high and confrontational. Frequent sharp rejections and accusations of overconfidence/blind-suggestion-following across crescent, unshape, and private-recipient-b. The agent is being held to "reason from the goal, don't bless my suggestions" repeatedly.

Projects Touched

  • private-recipient-b — slice composition / encapsulation rebuilt around eliminating foreign reads with statically-enforced invariants; business-combinators + contract-primitive engine decisions committed.
  • aeriea — pivot to a 3D visual "showing" channel; body-rendering correctness (normals, tangents, forward axis, facial morphs) + free-fly creator camera committed; 3D paperdoll foundation adopted.
  • crescent — typechecker re-examined from first principles; decision to move toward a proof-assistant model with adversarial audits; metatable-metamethod proof work committed.
  • unshape — editor/UI design ("mode belongs to the slot"); vector-type and error-message refactors; expression-language crate rename open (wick taken).
  • TTRPG sidequest — cultivation TTRPG scaffold + validation harness, mechanics grounded in a 22-book corpus; multi-tier LLM extraction-recall experiment.
  • fuwafuwa — autonomous Discord/Moltbook monitoring (31 sessions).

Next Steps (inferred from session endpoints)

  1. private-recipient-b: execute the all-phases composition rework; enforce slice encapsulation (no foreign reads) statically.
  2. aeriea: build out the adopted 3D paperdoll foundation as the showing channel; resolve the Opus-quality / no-runtime-LLM tension.
  3. crescent: autonomously, indefinitely extend the proof-assistant typechecker model toward completeness with adversarial audits, pausing only if user input is required.
  4. unshape: implement the slot-mode editor primitive set; settle the expression-language rename out of band.
  5. TTRPG sidequest: continue corpus-grounded mechanics design with agents recording findings; refine extraction chunk/slice strategy.
  6. fuwafuwa: continue autonomous monitoring at baseline.
