2026-03-05 — normalize CLI consolidation and server-less groups API

107 user messages across 16 sessions. A day almost entirely split between two projects: normalize CLI restructuring and server-less API design. Multiple handoff chains with sessions picking up from plan files, running subagents in parallel, and handing off again. Motif saw a brief exploratory session in the early morning.

Key themes

normalize CLI consolidation — The dominant thread (10 sessions on March 5). Sessions 5debf20f, d4b33444, c1d6ac51, 225b116f, 1f83d671, d458cb60, 69d421cf, f9cf793d, ffed9bf1, de9c7df3 form a relay chain working through CLI command restructuring. Core question: how to reorganize normalize analyze and its many subcommands without creating a flat list or an overloaded namespace. User proposed grouping analysis commands differently: metrics as a peer namespace rather than a subcommand, clean separation of ranking from structural inspection. Design tension: "a million analyze subcommands isn't ideal" → iterative redesign toward a flatter, more composable shape. Later sessions pulled into rules unification (unified API vs. returning enum wrappers), and a CLAUDE.md note was added: "unifying into an enum return is not unifying." Session de9c7df3 added a long-running architectural goal: incremental-first architecture for LSP compatibility.

server-less groups API — Sessions 5e5bcddd, 8fa1f04a, 2696df86, bce54c10, ff07a07d worked through a complementary thread. The immediate task: design and implement grouped CLI sections in server-less (like git help section headers) — the normalize CLI needed this feature to present command groups meaningfully. Turns in 5e5bcddd debated whether Metric<E> generic over both metric and entity makes sense vs. just generic over entity. Design settled on grouped help sections, with clap not natively supporting it. Session 2696df86 then published multiple alpha releases (0.2.1-alpha.4 through alpha.6 for server-less and its sub-crates) as the groups support was added. Side discussion in ff07a07d: sanity check of whether server-less is genuinely different from clap — the framing landed on "you write an impl, server-less handles arbitrary projection," updated into the README. Session bce54c10 explored generic methods on generic structs as a potential consumer feature.

Motif architecture design — Session 4e852a6a (evening, not counted in March 5 stats but timestamped there) was an open exploration of motif's purpose and design. Questions: what does it mean to "find structure of proofs"? How does HoTT, category theory, Curry-Howard connect to practical proof graph construction? Key insight surfaced: "a proof step is all representations that are feasible to extract" — the graph falls out naturally from explaining every step of every proof. Architecture target: the most general architecture possible, specifically so motif doesn't violate its own goal before starting. Near-term goal written down: choose a representation, parse one known proof, map connections manually. Committed initial CLAUDE.md with these design notes.

direction check on normalize focus — Session 53de7a82 was a brief meta-check: "am I focusing too much on normalize? Are threads too disjointed?" Haiku subagents were spawned to assess. Confirmation: normalize is intentionally multi-directional because the project itself needs refinement in multiple directions simultaneously. The Language trait refactor thread was noted as missing from the analysis.

Patterns

Alpha publish cadence — server-less hit alpha.4 → alpha.5 → alpha.6 in a single day across parallel sessions. Each publish was driven by a small fix or new feature (groups support, a macros sub-crate version bump). The pattern: design in one session, implement in a subagent, publish in the same session, pick up in the next.

Handoff relay chains — Most sessions on March 5 start with "Implement the following plan:" from a plan file. The chain is: session hits context limit or logical breakpoint → write plan file → new session inherits → continues or spawns subagents → writes next plan. This relay is consistent across all normalize and server-less sessions.

Short sharp turns — Many turns are 3-12 words: "yeah!", "keep going", "alright", "time to handoff?". The user is directing rapid-fire and trusting the session to maintain continuity. Contrast with Motif session which has longer exploratory exchanges because the design space was open.

CLI design as ongoing tension — Every normalize CLI session referenced unresolved structure: too many subcommands, unclear grouping, semantic duplication between commands. The consolidation is real work (session after session narrows toward a cleaner shape) but the destination is not yet clear. By end of day, the TODO captured: simplify CLI is still a top-priority open item.

Direction signal

March 5 is primarily a normalize infrastructure day — CLI shape, rule API unification, incremental architecture goals — interlaced with server-less feature work that directly serves normalize. The Motif session planted a first architectural stake but is not yet active development. The multi-session relay pattern is functioning well: work is genuinely continuing across handoffs rather than restarting. Open items by end of day: CLI consolidation still in progress, rules unified API next up (sarif subcommand mentioned), server-less groups published but consumers not yet integrated.

Token Usage

Totals for March 5 (messages timestamped 2026-03-05, 107 messages across 16 sessions):

  • Input tokens: 13,484
  • Output tokens: 463,588
  • Cache read: 132,459,123
  • Cache create: 1,762,013
  • Grand total: 134,698,208 tokens

Cache efficiency: 98.7% served from cache (cache_read / (cache_read + cache_create)). Consistent with recent days (2026-03-04: 98.4%). The relay handoff pattern keeps large context blocks hot across session boundaries.

Heaviest sessions by output tokens (across the full since/until window that includes these sessions):

  • 8fa1f04a (25 msgs, 69K out, ~98.7% cache) — server-less generics, groups feature, alpha publish cycle
  • 64fd082e (28 msgs, 64K out, ~97.4% cache) — normalize fixture subagents, parallel worktrees, worktree merge
  • 2696df86 (17 msgs, 48K out, ~98.4% cache) — server-less groups API, alpha.4–alpha.6 publish chain
  • 5debf20f (10 msgs, 39K out, ~98.2% cache) — normalize CLI command consolidation, DU for input/output
  • c233aa44 (7 msgs, 39K out, ~98.6% cache) — normalize rule noise audit, fix patterns, eglint findings

Sessions with lower message counts but high output — several single-turn handoff executions (ffed9bf1, f9cf793d, 225b116f) each produced 25–57K output tokens by running implementation plans in full before handing back.
