2026-02-20 — Sensory Prose Deep Dive & Reincarnate Infrastructure Push

A massively productive day across multiple projects with two clear threads: an enormous exploratory session on sensory prose architecture for existence, and distributed implementation work across reincarnate's type safety and design calibration.

Sensory Prose (existence) — The Core Thread

Session 1e13057d is the dominant work of the day. Roughly 13 hours of continuous, exploratory conversation building out a comprehensive design for prose generation that narrates sensations across all five (plus more) senses.

What Happened

Started with a deceptively simple question: "what prose would narrate sensations?" Spiraled into a full design session covering:

  • Sensory dimensions: sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, proprioception, interoception, pain/nociception, and less-obvious ones like humidity, kinesthetic sense
  • Contextual variability: how the same physical stimulus reads completely differently based on neurodivergence, trauma, environment, identity (Deaf communities, sign language, language barriers, disability)
  • Trigger mechanisms: realized the "three-category" distinction (independent/ambient/latent) was wrong—they're just types of triggers, and there's no fixed number
  • Content breadth: from sensory fundamentals (hot surfaces, coil whine, tv static, nails on chalkboard) through cooking methods (Maillard reaction, burnt vs grilled), acquired tastes, texture sensitivity, empathetic responses to pain
  • Advanced dynamics: fatigue/humidity interactions, stress modifiers on sensory gating, hygiene conditions and executive dysfunction, allergy acquisition, immune effects (MCAS, pregnancy as immunodeficient state)

Design Artifacts Generated

Created multiple research documents with full literary examples:

  • Linguistic toolkit for combining clauses
  • Literary prose analysis of sensory sentences
  • NLG aggregation and surface realization research

Generated 8+ concrete prose examples via subagents covering different states (calm/anxious/dissociated/overwhelmed indoor/outdoor), dialogue with regional variation, waking after poor sleep, cold flat mood walking.

Architectural Pivot

After generating prose samples, analyzed: how do we construct this rather than hard-code it? Designed a probabilistic compositor system based on:

  • Observation sources (what triggers prose generation)
  • Realization engine (transforming observations into prose)
  • Lexical sets (word/phrase banks organized by semantic role)
  • Sentence architectures (participle phrases, adverbial fragments, declarative statements)

Key constraint: offline generation, no LLM calls during gameplay.

Deepening the Model

Conversation evolved to dialogue (slang, vernacular, accent, ellipses, hesitation, cutting off), personality in speech ("to be fair," defensive phrases), emotional speech patterns (irritation, confrontation), and narration tone itself (choppiness/staccato vs flowing, momentum vs directional intentionality).

Recognized the prose style should reflect character state—delirium = muddy thoughts with blurred boundaries, exhaustion = different pacing/flow.

Cultural & Literary Grounding

Added references: Porpentine (interactive fiction), ROMA (vocaloid with neurodivergence themes), Porter Robinson, Mitski. Identified a Google Drive of ROMA song sources for lyric analysis.

Recognized the gap: most people aren't using LLMs for their generalization capabilities—this project is trying to do something genuinely novel.

Remaining Work

At session end, direction is clear but unfinished:

  • Observation sources (what events trigger prose)
  • Realization engine (transforming to text)
  • Lexical set expansion
  • Multi-observation architectures (not just single triggers)

The session includes self-aware notes that the design is still "super incomplete" but the shape is becoming clear enough to start building.

Reincarnate (Twine/Harlowe) — Distributed Work

18 other sessions scattered across the day, primarily tackling type safety and design calibration for the Harlowe compiler/emitter in reincarnate.

TypeScript Strict Mode Tightening (session 7aa180b4)

Proposed extending tsconfig to @tsconfig/strictest: strict, noUIA, eOPT, verbatimModuleSyntax, noFallthroughCasesInSwitch, noImplicitOverride.

Spawned 12 parallel subagents to fix strict errors across multiple game codebases. Discovered:

  • Runtime had intentional any widening that needed architectural decisions
  • Created an ADR documenting why some any casts are justified
  • Fixed emitters to stop producing implicit any

Remaining: 337 TS7053 errors (index access type safety) to address. This is a methodical, distributed effort.

Harlowe Feature Implementation & Bug Fixes

Multiple sessions tackled:

  • (source:) macro: passage source text emission with configurable behavior ('true'/'gamewide'/'conservative'/'false')
  • Variadic signatures: debated whether patterns like (...items: (T | T[])[]) are correct for Harlowe's flattening behavior
  • Type stubs: reconciling TypeScript coverage for Flash/GML APIs
  • Regression testing: audit for missing tests, clarified that tests should verify contract not implementation

Work is scattered across sessions but shows a pattern: identifying incomplete coverage statically, then either implementing or marking as deferred.

Calibration Research (existence again)

Session 4d018dc2 and subagents worked through biophysiological research with PMID citations:

  • Adenosine/stress effects on emotion regulation
  • HPA axis stress creep
  • Fatigue/energy drain
  • Neurotransmitter half-lives
  • Sleep quality multipliers

Sessions 444ab029 pushed citation discipline: went back through all prior research and added PMIDs for hormone ranges, HRT pharmacokinetics, menstrual cycle dynamics, pregnancy, lactation, contraception. Recognized docs→code references rot fast but not tracking them is worse.

Low-Effort Parallel Work

  • ptera.world prose site: Fixed broken links to header anchors (need autolinking feature)
  • existence game state management: Noted janky alias patterns; wanted to inline them despite noise because it's tech debt worth resolving
  • Various existence design tangents: Hidden backstory mechanics, DID/plurality representation (alters, co-fronting, median systems, character-based headmates), parasocial relationships, RPF/fandom communities

Patterns & Observations

  1. Research-driven development: Heavy investment in understanding before building (sensory prose, biophysiology). When unclear, spawn research subagents rather than guess.

  2. Architectural debates matter: The conversation repeatedly circled back to "is this the right structure?" for quality/augmentNT/triggers/etc. Hours spent questioning before committing.

  3. Tech debt is tracked but deferred: approximation debt, simulation debt, type widening, test coverage—all noted for later, organized in DESIGN/*.md and TODO.md files.

  4. Citation discipline is recent and improving: existence simulation now requires PMID backing. This was a deliberate push mid-day.

  5. Work is heavily parallelized: 33 separate sessions, with subagents spinning up research/implementation tasks while main thread continues architectural thinking. Suggests good task decomposition.

  6. Autosuggest is weirdly good: Frequent pattern of user skepticism ("i don't know why autosuggest suggested this") followed by "...yeah that's a good point." Autosuggest pulled design suggestions (prose compositor, observation sources) and structural ideas (INFLUENCES.md, TODO.md tracking).

Time Distribution

  • Sensory prose exploration: ~13 hours (session 1e13057d, 2026-02-20 13:02 to 2026-02-21 09:13, but mostly on 20th)
  • Harlowe/TypeScript work: ~8-10 hours distributed across 18 sessions
  • Calibration research: ~3 hours (subagent-driven)
  • Misc polish & design tangents: ~2-3 hours
  • Total active time: Estimated 26+ hours across 33 sessions (high context switching cost)

Closing State

Both projects are in active development with clear work queues. Sensory prose design is complete enough to start implementation; reincarnate is methodically closing type safety gaps. existence (the game) is deepening its design with simulation fidelity as the north star.

Token Usage

Total: 437.9M tokens across 3,366 turns across 31 sessions.

  • Input: 6.4K
  • Output: 418.3K
  • Cache Read: 430.4M
  • Cache Create: 7.2M
  • Overall cache hit ratio: 98.4%

Notably, session 1e13057d (sensory prose deep dive) dominated the day at 216 turns despite its median output per turn being lower than other heavyweight sessions. The extremely high cache hit ratio (98.4% overall) reflects the accumulated context build-up typical of long exploratory sessions and distributed agent work where prior context is heavily reused.
