2026-02-05
February 5 was an exploratory/design-focused day spanning multiple projects, with heavy architectural work on code analysis tooling and moderate continuation on various initiatives.
Projects & Focus
normalize dominated the session — architecture discussions around static analysis and code intelligence, including:
- Extensive debate on linting strategy: copying existing lint rules (clippy/eslint) vs. building normalize-specific semantic analysis
- Decision: implement syntax-rules for pure syntax checks + normalize-lint for semantic analysis requiring full structural knowledge
- Clarified that normalize's strength is architecture analysis (fan-in, coupling metrics, symbol graphs) not general-purpose linting
- Discussed DataLog/Ascent as query language, questioning whether it's the right fit vs. rolling custom DSL
- Import resolution still incomplete (fan-in metrics blocked by module→file mapping)
- Session spanned from 04:58 through 12:28, interrupted multiple times by context limits
interconnect (federation protocol):
- Initial discovery work on project scope
- Contrasted federation problem space: why don't people do federation? why is netcode hard?
- Design principle: the protocol should be "invisible" to existing architectures, allowing federation as opt-in
- Explored motivating use cases: federated social networks (Twitter/Discord/Instagram/Facebook), forums, games
- Tension points around server availability/downtime (intentional offline-first design vs. optional replication like email/IRC)
- Discussed cryptographic identity (Ed25519 vs. post-quantum) — settled on generic algo-agnostic primitives
- No implementation yet, just architectural framing
pad (capture/note-taking daemon):
- Implemented browser extension for context menu-based content capture to pad daemon
- Supports Chrome (Manifest V3) and Firefox
- Added to TODO.md as a starting point for future expansions (additional capture sources: clipboard, PDF, email, RSS)
- Session time: 05:03-09:03
pteraworld (personal spatial portfolio):
- Continued work on interactive ecosystem visualization (force-directed graph with region groupings)
- Major focus: multi-lens visualization system
- Implemented multiple layout groupings: ecosystem (organization), status (maturity), domain, technology
- UI/UX refinements: color palette independence from layout selection, legend system, animation fixes
- Detailed layout tuning for node positions (rust radius, domains/games/infrastructure placement, overlap resolution)
- Graph visualization reaches layout refinement phase rather than architectural phase
- Session spanned 21:54 through 02:53 next day (relatively continuous, deep focus)
ascent-interpreter (Datalog interpreter/JIT for ascent):
- Decision on org placement: Code Intelligence category (alongside normalize, gels, motif)
- Discussed scaffolding from template repo, naming convention (ascent-interpreter)
- No implementation work yet
Patterns & Observations
Architectural depth over breadth: When working on projects like normalize and interconnect, the user engaged in extended design discussions before implementation. Questions about fit (DataLog for normalize? Crypto for interconnect?) showed thoughtful technology selection rather than rushing to code.
Visualization work consumed focused, continuous time: The pteraworld session ran nearly continuously through the night, suggesting deep engagement with layout tuning. The user iteratively refined node positions, radius values, and animation behavior — the kind of work that benefits from sustained focus rather than scattered sessions.
Cross-cutting decisions: Several sessions ended with "let's add this to TODO.md" — a pattern of surfacing future work rather than deferring decisions into limbo.
Design-first for new projects: Both interconnect and ascent-interpreter went through naming/org placement/scope framing before any scaffolding work, suggesting mature design process.
"What's the right tool/approach?" questions dominated:
- DataLog vs. custom DSL for normalize queries?
- Copying lints vs. building semantic linting?
- Federation architecture: what makes it hard?
- These show active architectural thinking, not just execution.
Unfinished
- normalize: linting implementation deferred, module resolution incomplete, ascent interpreter concept only
- interconnect: fully scoped but not yet spiked
- pad: browser extension scaffolded, additional capture sources in TODO
- pteraworld: layout tuning complete enough to commit but minor refinements needed (some node overlap, essay text positioning)
Session Quality
Most sessions ended with either commits or clear "next steps added to TODO" — good artifact capture. The one exception was some normalize context-limit interruptions that may have lost context partway through design discussions, though the user kept returning to the same line of reasoning.
Token Usage
Total: 152.96M tokens across 142 turns | 9 concurrent sessions | 97.5% average cache hit ratio
The day was heavily driven by cached context and long-running sessions with incremental user prompts ("ok what next?" style). Remarkable cache efficiency across the board (94–97% hit ratio) reflects sustained session focus where initial context loads were amortized over many turns.
| Session | Output Tokens | Cache Hit Ratio | Turns |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2d6f3c8a (concord) | 1,723 | 97.4% | 28 |
| 6e660e63 (normalize) | 892 | 95.7% | 41 |
| e0e0a560 (pad) | 582 | 95.7% | 20 |
| e788e54f (pteraworld) | 569 | 95.8% | 22 |
| 557481a6 (interconnect) | 293 | 95.8% | 18 |
| 951cb757 (playmate/wick) | 76 | 91.5% | 6 |
| abfcc252 (ascent-interpreter) | 42 | 89.3% | 5 |
| 70eba111 (pad) | 38 | 90.4% | 1 |
| bcf3f577 (concord) | 11 | 89.4% | 1 |
Heaviest sessions by output:
- 2d6f3c8a (concord) dominated with 1.7K output tokens across 28 turns — architecture work on API bindings IR with multiple context resets but excellent cache reuse.
- 6e660e63 (normalize) at 892 tokens over 41 turns — the longest session by turns, driven by design discussions with frequent "what next?" style prompts reloading prior context.
- e0e0a560 & e788e54f (pad browser extension and pteraworld visualization) each ~580 tokens — sustained deep focus sessions.
Cache efficiency: All sessions maintained 89–97% cache hit ratio, indicating effective context layering where initial loads (payload cost) were spread across many incremental turns.
