2026-03-01 Session Log

753 user messages across 93 sessions. Very dense day of multi-project work with two dominant threads: architectural introspection on normalize and continuous incremental improvements across tiltshift, rescribe, paraphase, moonlet, and tooling.

Major Activity Centers

normalize (Code Intelligence)

Intense day of analysis and deep-dive work:

Architecture & Complexity Analysis

  • Long conversation analyzing why normalize itself is 210K lines — breakdown into three cost centers: language metadata unification, chat session infrastructure, and core functionality
  • Ran analysis on external codebases (Enso visual programming language) to understand what drives codebase size and structure
  • Questions about React vs optics-based architectures, monolit vs distributed rendering

Performance Optimization

  • Session on optimizing normalize analyze health (was ~8.5s on normalize itself)
  • Profiling work to identify bottleneck subcommands

New analyze Subcommands (Friday focus) Added observability commands throughout the day:

  • normalize analyze now defaults to health (via #[cli(default)] macro)
  • imports — import centrality via fan-in analysis
  • test-ratio — per-module test/impl LOC breakdown
  • ceremony — interface impl boilerplate ratio
  • clusters — groups similar functions into connected components

CLI Improvements

  • Implemented #[cli(default)] macro support in server-less (affects normalize's CLI)
  • Discussions about #[cli(skip)], #[server(skip)] cross-protocol convenience

tiltshift (Binary Format Analysis)

Highly productive day — new subcommands and signal processing:

Core Features

  • tiltshift analyze — added --depth N flag (default 1) for recursive span analysis
  • tiltshift region <file> <offset> <len> — slice and analyze file regions
  • tiltshift diff <file_a> <file_b> — O(n) byte sweep producing STRUCT/DATA run diffs
  • tiltshift scan <file> <pattern> — pattern scanning
  • tiltshift probe <file> <offset> [len] — low-level inspection (predecessor to region)

Hypothesis Engine

  • Three-pass conversion system committed (e43e492) wired into analyze
  • Bytecode grammar discovery signals added (with frequency analysis)
  • Discussion about obfuscation for anonymizing corpus data

Performance

  • tiltshift obfuscate implementation — multi-file glob support, Aho-Corasick optimization (massive speedup), added Rayon parallelization
  • Analysis of govdocs1 corpus (~330 GiB, ~33 files remaining in download)

Direction/Design Clarifications

  • Naming scheme for format support (standout: pure-text writers get simpler names)
  • Format corpus validation workflow and statistical testing strategy
  • Session drifted into CLAUDE.md refinement around handoff protocol

rescribe (Document Conversion)

Scope clarification and production readiness:

  • RTF support extended — preserving properties/unknown constructs
  • Roundtrip fuzz targets implemented and passing (direction corrected mid-session)
  • Discussion: CLAUDE.md enforcement for lesson learning when things go wrong
  • Scope question: EPUB, FB2, MOBI, KFX, AZW3 — where do they sit in priority?
  • KFX/ion-rs gap identified (experimental, year of unreleased commits)
  • RTF now approaching production grade (feature flags for fine-tuning performance)

Format Support Planning

  • Format audit doc to track progression stages
  • Govdocs1 corpus testing (govdocs1 distribution + structure, not just frequency)
  • Markov chain thinking about node transition prevalence

paraphase (Format Conversion)

Quick wins and deprioritization:

  • TSV, CSS color vars, WKT converters shipped (5d14120)
  • KDL format deprioritized (nodes have args + props + children simultaneously — no clean JSON mapping yet)
  • Handoff on 3D geometry representation work

moonlet (Lua Runtime)

Minor fixes:

  • stdlib.d.lua + prelude .d.lua loading implemented (8af4f39)
  • NUMERIC_META/STRING_META specialcasing clarified (should come from stdlib)
  • Type annotation work in progress

server-less (Derive Macros)

Update released:

  • Version bump to 0.2.1-alpha.1
  • #[cli(default)] macro implementation affecting downstream users (normalize)

Session Patterns

Request Style: Highly conversational, often exploratory ("why?", "what does this look like?", "does this make sense?"). Mix of strategic questions and tactical asks ("run the fuzz targets", "commit this").

Interruptions & Context: Multiple sessions hit context limits and continued across boundaries (at least 4 major conversations). Sessions frequently interrupted for tool use and then resumed.

Decision-Making: User mode is "explore first, decide later" — deep dives into external codebases (Enso, unicorn ML), architectural tradeoffs (React vs optics), even off-topic research (filing taxes as a metaphor for system design). Then actionable direction emerges mid-conversation.

Handoff Protocol: Heavy use of session handoff pattern (plan mode) — noting when tasks are complete, direction is needed, or context drifted. Multiple sessions explicitly tagged "direction needed" or "direction is open."

Async Corpora Work: Download of govdocs1 corpus left running in background (321.3/330.4 GiB at end of conversation).

Observations

  1. normalize is the meta-project — used to analyze itself and external systems. Deep introspection on why it's complex, which informs the tool's own design.

  2. tiltshift is primary focus — most feature additions, most subcommand work. Becoming a comprehensive binary analysis toolkit.

  3. Format validation is the new frontier — rescribe/paraphase/tiltshift all trending toward corpus-driven development (statistical distribution, transition prevalence, fixture generation from real data).

  4. Tooling investment paying off — server-less macro changes ripple across ecosystem; tiltshift optimization (Aho-Corasick + Rayon) showing how perf work compounds.

  5. Architecture questions surface across projects — monolit vs distributed, complexity hiding via codegen, optics vs imperative reactivity. These aren't project-specific; they're system-design themes.

Token Usage

Day total: 1.39 billion tokens (77K input, 5.2M output, 1.36B cache read, 25M cache create).

Cache efficiency: 98.2% cache hit ratio across all turns, indicating effective prompt caching for multi-turn conversations and session continuity.

Top 5 sessions by output tokens:

The heaviest sessions align with the most complex work: normalize architectural analysis (0a4aedd1), tiltshift feature development (de7d8d8c), and paraphase/rescribe format work (a46f8d5a, ddcc259a). Most sessions maintained 98%+ cache efficiency, reflecting consistent context reuse within multi-turn conversations.
