2026-02-15 Activity Log

A high-momentum day split between two major ecosystems: Twine/SugarCube runtime implementation dominated the early-to-mid day, while DoL decompilation and testing surfaced render bugs late. Supporting work on normalize crate extraction and arceus-garden game logic (habits system) added texture. Total: 40 unique user-initiated conversations.

By the Numbers

  • Total user messages: 150 turns across 40 sessions
  • Most active sessions: Twine/SugarCube work (11 sessions running ~8-12 hours), DoL testing (6 sessions), normalize refactoring (3 sessions)
  • Session fragmentation: Extreme — many context timeouts requiring mid-session handoffs with multi-turn analysis
  • Pattern: Quick problem-scoping → implementation → testing → context overflow → restart with prior context summary

Major Focus Areas

1. Twine/SugarCube Runtime Gaps (08:00-18:00)

The bulk of the day. All work tied to getting the runtime actually executable end-to-end.

Phase 1 completion checks: Sessions [82874339], [cde22449], [3a0ee3d4]

  • Bootstrap phase verified: startup order, eval scope, CSS links, error surface
  • Next: runtime wikification, stub globals, HTML attribute resolution
  • Removed shim code where extensions sufficed (jq version bump to v4)
  • Hit package.json robustness issues mid-run

Concrete gaps identified (prioritized):

  1. Stub globals in engine.ts (Passage.render, Scripting.parse, etc.) — may break stories
  2. Runtime wikification (Wikifier.wikifyEval() — 313 uses in DoL, jQuery.wiki() — 4 uses)
  3. HTML attribute resolution (@class, @id via setAttribute)
  4. Link-related stubs (passage.safe(), visit counter)
  5. Macro system gaps (small macros still stubbed)

Architecture decisions crystallizing: Platform modules (input, dialog, settings, save-ui) must be independently swappable. Pushed back hard on folding saves/settings into dialog — required CLAUDE.md clarification.

2. DoL Decompilation & Testing Issues (15:00-23:00+)

E2E testing of decompiled DoL surfaced cascading failures. User stress evident: "what's going on?", "didn't we regen dol?", "XD then maybe we should make the cache better" (about embed caching).

Error sequence:

  1. State.prng is undefined (17:35) → arrow function body eagerness
  2. illegal character U+00A9 (17:52) → encoding in TypeScript output
  3. <<numberpool>> requires SugarCube 2.5.0 (17:58) — version check failing
  4. V.options is undefined (18:00) — globals not initialized in correct scope
  5. widget_adultShop is not defined (22:28) — variable scoping issue in emitted code

Patterns suggest translation → emit → scope binding chain breaking under real game complexity. User implied exhaustion: multiple restarts, "still not working even after restart", navigation between sessions at 22:36 just to check context usage.

3. Habit System Design (12:55-15:43)

Session [7d4a4359]: Philosophy-first design for DoL's daily action loop friction.

Framing evolution:

  • Problem: users repeating wake→dress→shower→eat→comm every day is tedious
  • Initial guess: compress sequences → rejected (still friction)
  • Actual solution: auto-suggestion based on CART decision trees — surface likely next action without forcing it
  • ChatGPT feedback injected: risk of self-fulfilling feedback loops
  • Resolution: tie to "auto-advance" phase for next session

Design doc outputs:

  • Habits must observe arbitrary history depth (not fixed-window Markov)
  • Multiple activation triggers per action (time-based AND state-based)
  • Disability question: can we compute this in browser JS? (Answer: worst case WebGPU)
  • Calculation methods considered: xgboost, decision trees, time-decay weighting

Habit system design doc committed with all three dimensions included.

4. Normalize Crate Extraction (08:00-15:00)

Parallel work reducing the 18K-line CLI monolith via targeted extraction.

Completed: normalize-path-resolve (875 lines) and related refactoring Planned but not started:

  • normalize-view (tree.rs 1,512 lines + skeleton.rs 627 lines)
  • normalize-session-analysis (analysis.rs 1,965 lines)
  • OutputFormat and Interpreter into standalone crates
  • Per-concern module split (syntax-rules, index-rules potentially next)

Meta-discussion: "can/should we plan splitting the CLI commands now?" → Yes, started planning. Shadow git flagged as separate concern (its own crate).

5. Support & Tooling

Hologram (Discord RP bot) [e8532d28]: User reports — Nekotina embeds invisible, Luo config edit broken. Fix pushed.

Twine compiler bugs [c429cc0d], [f5c412df]:

  • \n → <br> fidelity gaps
  • <<nobr>> handling
  • keybinds integration with input.ts (circular dependency issues with dialog/layout detected)

Observation: Struggle Points

  1. Emit correctness under complexity: DoL's generated code has scope binding and variable initialization issues that worsen with game size. Multiple sessions ping-ponged between "is this the translator or the runtime?" — suggests fuzzy responsibility boundary.

  2. Context fragmentation: 40 sessions in one day with many multi-turn continuations means state loss, repeated analysis, and context thrashing. The handoff summaries themselves became verbose (analyzing prior context took entire turns).

  3. Scope creep in Twine work: Started day targeting "stub globals", ended with platform layer architecture debates, embed caching, and habit system design. Each session spawned new dependencies.

  4. Design trust gap: On habits — ChatGPT feedback triggered second-guessing ("can snowball into self-fulfilling routine") then pivoted to auto-suggest. User pushed back on confidence level multiple times ("can you please stop confidently making wrong guesses?", "make more educated guesses without being unreasonably confident?").

Direction Notes

  • Twine runtime: Needs systematic gap closure. Platform module architecture is clarified; next is wikification + globals. Don't optimize yet — get it working.
  • DoL testing: Variable scoping + scope binding issues are critical path blockers. May need to revisit translator's phase separation (the ContentNode[] model).
  • Normalize: Crate extraction is mechanical but necessary. Plan is solid; execution pending.
  • Habits: Design phase complete (moved to "auto-advance" planning); no implementation yet.

Next session should pick one: either finish Twine globals, or deep-dive DoL's scope issues, or start habits implementation.

Token Usage

Daily totals: 21,890 input tokens, 353,409 output tokens, 255.2M cache read, 5.9M cache create. Total tokens (sum): 261.5M. Overall cache hit ratio: 97.7% — extremely strong cache efficiency, indicating heavy context reuse across the 40 sessions.

Top 5 sessions by output tokens:

Cache efficiency insights: All sessions show excellent cache hit ratios (94–99%), with most clustered at 97–99%. The lowest ratio (91.2% on 371ac680, 93.0% on 52300f39) occurred in lighter sessions (2–3 turns). The extremely high cache read volume (255M tokens) reflects deep context reuse — many multi-turn handoffs summarizing prior conversations, allowing subsequent turns to leverage compressed context from cache.
