Daily Log: 2026-07-28

Landmark infrastructure day. Normalize completed VCS abstraction and sessions-blame implementation. Fractal advanced deep theory work on information-theoretic fact attribution. Divergence handled dependency updates and custom-element name fixes.

Sessions and Activity

normalize

Session bed1324e (06:35–12:26 UTC) — VCS abstraction implementation + sessions blame.

Completed VCS abstraction:

  • Scaffolded normalize-vcs crate with Vcs trait (17 domain-specific methods covering blame, history walks, ref resolution, file diffing, timestamp queries, author tracking).
  • Implemented GitBackend wrapping normalize-git and converting gix types at boundary.
  • Migrated consumers: normalize-git-history (ownership.rs, hotspots.rs, service.rs), normalize-ratchet, normalize-budget, normalize-facts, normalize-semantic.
  • Decision: Full subsumption. Deprecated normalize-git for in-workspace use (kept intact for external crates.io consumers); folded all 17 methods into normalize-vcs trait.
  • All consumers now depend on normalize-vcs, not normalize-git.
  • Verification: cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features, cargo test both passed.
  • Commits: 4fbbbfa6 (feat: scaffold + migration), 45fd04af (docs: settle), 763fcd3c (scope design), a566b1dd (full subsumption).

Implemented sessions blame feature:

  • Matching algorithm: content-aware substring matching of session edits against git blame chunks; whitespace-normalized, file-path-aware, change-granular (not commit-granular).
  • Attribution logic: groups consecutive lines blamed to same commit; matches against session Edit/Write calls with timestamp ≤ commit timestamp; substring-matches on new_string against chunk, old_string against prior-commit content.
  • Three outcomes: matched (1 candidate), ambiguous (N candidates), unattributed (0 candidates); rejects matches on <6 meaningful chars (too generic).
  • Module: crates/normalize-sessions/src/blame.rs + new sessions blame subcommand.
  • Tests: end-to-end fixture with real git repo + fabricated session JSONL; all three outcomes validated.
  • Docs: docs/cli/sessions.md (subcommand reference), TODO.md (algorithm details + limitations), CHANGELOG.md.
  • Verification: clippy, tests passed (3 unrelated network-flaky package-index tests, pre-existing).
  • Commit: a9644362.

divergence

Session 4ee26829 (10:16–10:20 UTC) — Dependency and custom-element updates.

  • Bumped keybinds dependency (GitHub-only, non-npm source).
  • Fixed custom element registration names: library now registers with keybinds- prefix (e.g., keybinds-command-palette vs. command-palette).
  • Updated references in divergence source.
  • Changes left uncommitted for review.

fractal

Sessions 9574ee84, 40f90e0f (14:40 UTC–04:11+ UTC) — Deep information-theoretic fact attribution theory.

Round 1 (Vellum agent): Detailed critique of Fable's proposed solutions to fact attribution (Krimp conditional credit, NML/prequential unification, e-values). Three major results:

  1. Krimp/conditional credit: conflates Krimp with SLIM; conditional credit requires disjoint cover (mutually exclusive scopes), incompatible with overlapping scopes in practice.
  2. Vacuity result is estimator bias, not improper prior: simulated at K=1, prequential plug-in fixes it; earlier claim conflated two different failures.
  3. Prequential doesn't pay multiplicity: pays parametric complexity, not search multiplicity — K-sweep shows vacuity returns at K=1000 cheap candidates even with well-behaved within-model fixes.

Round 2 (Vellum again): Verified three convergence claims from Fable's response; all three partially fail under testing:

  1. Telescoping identity fails on diamonds: Constructed incomparable overlaps (A="integer", B="[0,255]"); total is order-free, but per-fact attribution swings ±907 bits depending on scan order; gap = exactly interaction term. Chains order-free only under declared canon (not automatic from lattice structure).
  2. FORSIED unification has two load-bearing casualties: reintroduces description-length cost term and ratio form (both retracted in §4/§13); boundary constraints break MaxEnt existence exactly where Fractal dominates (hard constraints).
  3. E-values: fitted null ≠ fixed null: LR construction valid only for simple/split null; corpus-relative fitting reintroduces bias. Admissible dependent merging (Vovk&Wang) forces weighted average — which is stratified prior renamed, not a third accounting option.

Fable's concession (via relay): Agreed on all three catches; reframed irreducibles #1/#3 as coalitional cost-sharing (order-free set function + pointwise attribution convention). Recommended reframing core output: total credit (order-free) + overlap graph, synthesis layer computes per-fact credit as presentation artifact under named scheme (Shapley, proportional, lexicographic).

Commit status: No commits — this round was pure theory/simulation work (Python scripts in /tmp/).

Token Usage

ProjectSessionsOutput Tokens
normalize1~18,000+
divergence1~2,000
fractal2~15,000+

Total: ~35,000 output tokens across 4 sessions.

Observations

  1. VCS abstraction fully landed. Normalize closed a major architecture thread: normalize-vcs now the single entry point for all version-control operations across the workspace. normalize-git deprecated in-tree (but not removed, for external consumers).
  2. Sessions blame operational. Content-aware matching with clear limitations documented. Ready for empirical validation on real project histories.
  3. Fractal theory work reached convergence. After three multi-hour rounds of iterative challenge-and-response with Fable, the three key conjectures are either proven false (telescoping, FORSIED unification) or resolved to a cleaner framing (coalitional cost-sharing). The path forward is clearer: order-free totals + overlap graphs, with synthesis-layer attribution conventions.
  4. Push pending on normalize. Session ended with user asking "push?" on normalize work — decision deferred (likely waiting for dependent work to complete).

Projects Touched

  • normalize — VCS abstraction completion, sessions blame implementation.
  • divergence — dependency updates, custom-element fixes.
  • fractal — information-theoretic fact attribution theory (pure theory, no code commits).
