Daily Log: 2026-04-21

Primary activity in unshape (generative media toolkit) with extended delegated subagent work. Secondary activity in PixivUtil2 and hologram with minimal engagement. The day shows a pattern of directed delegation: design direction set in the main session, then 9 subagents executed large implementation blocks in parallel.

Sessions and Activity

unshape (2026-04-20 10:03 – 2026-04-21 05:47)

Extended session spanning two calendar days with intense design and implementation work. User started by exploring plasticity/MOI prior art in the morning (10:03), then pivoted to establishing a node graph input/output system design. Directed multiple subagents across the full day to implement various capabilities:

Design Phase (10:03–12:23): Nine messages exploring conceptual framing. Examined XNurbs (energy-minimization NURBS), MOI's elephant node editor, whether unshape needs computational parity with CAD tools. Shifted from "parity" thinking to "unshape as a toolkit for any X → X operation on arbitrary media." Switched model to Opus (11:43) for longer task completion, then back to Opus plan mode (12:23).

Verification Phase (12:23–15:46): Two subagent verification passes looking for op gaps and what needs implementation.

Implementation Phase (15:43–04:50): Nine parallel subagents completed major implementation blocks:

  1. Remap/Clamp/Smoothstep field combinators — 7 op structs (Remap, Clamp, Smoothstep, Step, Abs, Negate, Pow) for scalar field output manipulation with fluent API
  2. 3D SDF primitives — 10 signed distance field types (Sphere, Box, RoundedBox, Cylinder, Capsule, Torus, Cone, Plane, Triangle, LineSegment) using Inigo Quilez formulas
  3. Mesh boolean/scatter/mirror ops — wrapped existing mesh functions as Op structs, verified Scatter and Mirror already existed with full implementation
  4. 2-bone IK solver — analytical solution with pole vector support; pole target for FABRIK; AimConstraint
  5. ConstantNode and GraphInput — core graph nodes with EvalContext inputs, 96 tests, error handling for missing/mismatched inputs
  6. GraphOutput node and introspection — sink counterpart to GraphInput, graph interface discovery methods
  7. Mesh serialization — added serde derives to Mesh, MeshBuilder, boolean ops, fixed 13 pre-existing clippy violations in selection-aware ops
  8. Bezier cubic keyframe interpolation — tangent structs, Newton's method for parameter solving, De Casteljau evaluation
  9. Dual-quaternion skinning and morph targets — DQS with antipodality correction (test_dqs_avoids_candy_wrapper), blend modes, sparse morph target deltas

Post-implementation passes (08:51–04:50): Seven additional subagents:

  • GraphOutput + introspection (execute_named_outputs traverse upstream sources)
  • Voronoi fracture with Sutherland-Hodgman clipping
  • UV projection/packing ops (13 ops: planar/cylindrical/spherical/box projection, atlas packing, UV transforms)
  • CurvatureField (Gaussian/Mean/Max/Min), ConstantMesh node, verify Vec3 field combinators
  • Dual contouring mesh extraction from SDFs (QEF solver, gradient normals via finite differences)
  • Audio DSP utility ops (PitchQuantizer, SampleAndHold, SlewLimiter, MidSideEncode/Decode)
  • Fixed unshape-jit feature unification bug (feature transitivities from unshape-image requiring cond/func features)

Later evening (01:07–04:50): Continued delegating as direction stayed clear:

  • Voxel ops (SmoothVoxels, BlurVoxels, CompositeVoxels, ThresholdVoxels)
  • Image serialization (Image, ImageField, ConstantImage node)
  • ColorRamp, Fresnel, LayerWeight field ops
  • Point cloud generators (SphereSurface, SphereVolume, GridPoints, BoxVolume, SdfSurface)
  • 2D vector path operations (PathBlend, PathArray with ArraySpacing, DashPath, registered 13 primitive path ops)

Final state (05:47): Updated TODO.md and prepared to push.

All subagent work was committed cleanly. Test suites grew across the codebase: output_ops (7 tests), sdf.rs (already tested), ik.rs (enhanced), animation.rs (4 new), skin.rs (+candy_wrapper test), mesh boolean/scatter/mirror (354 tests pass), voronoi (7 tests), uv_ops (16 tests), mesh serialization (5 new), dual contouring (8 tests), audio utility (14 tests), voxel ops (13 tests), image serde (3 tests), color_ramp + view_dependent (9 tests), point cloud (11 tests), path ops (21 tests across primitives + blend/array/dash).

PixivUtil2 (2026-04-21 08:26)

Single message reporting an import error: libstdc++.so.6: cannot open shared object file. No action taken.

hologram (2026-04-21 08:00)

Single message asking about Claudia's permissions in the live database. No resolution captured in logs.

Token Usage Summary

unshape session only (longest and most compute-intensive):

Output Tokens by PhaseCount
Design/exploration (10:03–12:23)~8,000
Subagent work (15:43–04:50)~800,000+
Total (main session messages)251 in tokens / 92,961 out tokens

Per-subagent token usage (from task summaries):

  • Field ops: 29,749 tokens
  • 3D SDF: 45,117 tokens
  • Mesh booleans/scatter/mirror: 68,566 tokens
  • 2-bone IK: 60,600 tokens
  • ConstantNode/GraphInput: 72,164 tokens
  • GraphOutput + introspection: 55,138 tokens
  • Mesh serialization: 119,478 tokens
  • Bezier interpolation: 62,757 tokens
  • DQ skinning + morphs: 82,777 tokens
  • Voronoi fracture: 38,641 tokens
  • UV ops: 95,931 tokens
  • CurvatureField + constants: 76,349 tokens
  • Dual contouring: 106,021 tokens
  • Audio DSP: 64,466 tokens
  • Voxel ops: 44,431 tokens
  • Image serde: 52,794 tokens
  • ColorRamp/Fresnel: 58,185 tokens
  • Point cloud: 61,222 tokens
  • Path blend/morph/array: 151,920 tokens

Aggregate across three projects: in=251, out=92,961 (reported in session header)

Cache efficiency very high across subagent passes — each agent leveraged context from prior work, building incrementally on the graph/field/mesh foundation. No external API calls, pure local compilation and testing.

Observations

  1. Delegation at scale: Nine subagents working in parallel, each picking up clear task definition from the main session's design doc. This is the "unshape monorepo as a whole → toolkit for X → X operations on any medium" thesis being operationalized. Each new op added is another building block toward media-agnostic transformations.

  2. Graph system taking shape: The ConstantNode/GraphInput/GraphOutput work represents the substrate for dataflow. Graph inputs accept external values, outputs expose results, introspection methods allow the graph to describe itself. This bridges the gap between "ops as functions" and "ops as composable nodes in a visual interface."

  3. Feature unification bug discovery: The unshape-jit issue (transitive feature activation from unshape-image causing non-exhaustive matches) is an interesting dependency problem — feature flags activate across the workspace, but crates must opt into features locally or get compilation errors. Fixed by making cond and func features default in unshape-jit.

  4. Scope containment: No new major subsystems added. All work was either new ops (consistent with the "add anything expressible as an operation" direction) or connecting infrastructure (graph I/O, serialization). The day stayed focused on filling gaps in the existing design rather than expanding scope.

  5. Test coverage growth: Each subagent included tests (5–21 per task). The aggregate test count across unshape's crates grew significantly, supporting the incremental implementation approach.
