2026-03-02 — Building introspection infrastructure

739 user messages across 82 sessions. A day focused on building the tools to understand Claude Code interaction patterns, plus sustained work across several projects hitting important milestones.

Key themes

Introspection infrastructure — The day opened with a meta-question: how do we analyze how the user interacts with Claude Code? This led to implementing normalize sessions messages with --role, --since, --until, and --limit flags. The session logs show iteration on what query parameters make sense (daily archiving, filtering by role, date ranges), and discussion about using subagents (Haiku) to parallelize analysis of large daily message sets.

rescribe RTF roundtrip validation — Long session on RTF support in rescribe (de7d8d8c, 36 turns across 15h+). Started with corpus collection (govdocs1 download, formatcorpus analysis, LibreOffice source exploration), moved to fuzz-driven testing of RTF structure. Key insight: roundtrip fuzz target was backwards (RTF→IR→RTF should validate losslessness, but the session revealed the direction matters for what you can express). Also discussed zero-copy optimizations and discovering that memory usage from preserving props probably isn't a blocker right now. RTF format declared "production ready now?" with feature flags for fine-tuning perf characteristics.

gels v2 checker false positive elimination — Multiple interleaved sessions working through false positive categories (A, B, D, E, Cat J). Work pattern shows systematic elimination: fix one category, test, move to next. Cat J was the last to fall (8bce2f97, 2 turns). All 9 previously-failing assertion categories now pass. Sessions reference compound or narrowing implementation and elimination of "unknown identifier" errors in ann.lua. These sessions show careful, iterative fixing with commits between handoffs.

tiltshift corpus analysis — Session ff535d65 (4 turns) working on real-world corpus validation. Started with tiltshift prototype complete (158 tests, signals + hypothesis engine + CLI). Questions about format detection revealed tension: GIF has distinctive features but we can't optimize for specific formats — everything should be derivable from first principles.

normalize observability gaps — Multiple sessions closing observability TODOs: analyze impact, analyze surface, analyze layering, analyze provenance. These show careful incremental work:

  • analyze impact (caf57e07): hit performance issue with index rebuild being slow (regression). Tested incremental path.
  • analyze surface (d14c71bb): removed spurious --json/--jq/--jsonl support from display_with macro (OutputFormatter shouldn't have those flags).
  • analyze layering (c6b19af2): quick handoff after design work.
  • analyze provenance (9ae925a9): git blame → session-id/message-id linking, plus logical code relations (imports, calls).

bytecode grammar discovery signal — Session aedce636 (17 turns) on tiltshift bytecode analysis. Frequency analysis applied to Python .pyc opcodes. Key moment: built tiltshift obfuscate command to anonymize magic bytes, discovered Aho-Corasick brought dramatic speedup, added Rayon for parallelization. User expressed surprise at perf gains. Ended with analysis on actual corpus (~tiltshift-corpus).

gels stdlib loading — Session f6e8a305 (2 turns) and 1944c728 (8 turns) on loading stdlib.d.lua + prelude .d.lua in v2 checker. All 1123 assertions passing. Debate about type definitions: should number_meta be defined in stdlib as type number vs special-casing?

Patterns

Handoff as state machine — Most long sessions end with "handoff?" and user decision to either continue or move to next task. Sessions frequently restart from a plan, execute work, commit, then ask for direction. This creates natural break points.

Session interrupts as checkpoints — Many sessions show [Request interrupted by user for tool use] — indicates user is actively managing session state, possibly switching between multiple tasks simultaneously.

Tools as first-class — Early discussion about building tools for analysis (normalize sessions messages) reflects philosophy: make introspection a capability, not an afterthought. Followed by actual implementation.

Real-world corpus as validation gate — Multiple projects (rescribe, tiltshift) hitting "is it production ready?" questions answered by testing on real corpora (govdocs1, .pyc files, actual rtf). This is a consistent validation pattern.

Perf surprises as discovery — tiltshift obfuscate hitting Aho-Corasick slowdown (then speedup with proper algorithm) shows real-world performance testing uncovering implementation gaps quickly.

Direction signal

Work is distributed across verification/validation (corpus testing rescribe/tiltshift) and observability/introspection (normalize tools, understanding session patterns). The meta-goal of "analyze how I interact with Claude Code" is both a practical need and a test case for building analysis infrastructure more broadly.

Token Usage

Daily totals across 698 user messages in 80 sessions:

  • Input tokens: 62,325
  • Output tokens: 4,594,686
  • Cache read: 973,509,875
  • Cache create: 16,578,506
  • Grand total: 994,745,392 tokens

The striking feature is cache efficiency: 98.3% of tokens served from cache (cache_read / (cache_read + cache_create)). This indicates high reuse of foundational context across multiple sessions — likely the ecosystem CLAUDE.md, project structures, and codebase structure being loaded repeatedly.

Heaviest sessions by output tokens:

  • 0a4aedd1 (58 msgs, 648K out) — One-off problem scaffolding with graphical output / tessellation work, 98.1% cache hit
  • de7d8d8c (39 msgs, 363K out) — rescribe RTF roundtrip validation session, 98.3% cache hit
  • a46f8d5a (15 msgs, 200K out) — gels v2 checker work, 98.5% cache hit
  • ddcc259a (5 msgs, 199K out) — rescribe DocX gaps, 98.2% cache hit
  • 112b1bb9 (13 msgs, 176K out) — ooxml XLSX writer roundtrip & fuzzing, 98.9% cache hit

Sessions with lowest cache efficiency (still excellent):

  • 139a85f1 (8 msgs, 87K out, 93.4% cache) — ecosystem CLAUDE.md propagation session, includes fresh context loads
  • 0f02fef9 (3 msgs, 113K out, 95.1% cache) — normalize type extraction design work

The pattern shows sustained work on narrower tasks within larger context — most sessions inherit full codebase context but reuse it efficiently through cache, with occasional fresh context loads for cross-cutting changes like CLAUDE.md ecosystem updates.
