Daily Log: 2026-05-08

A day of focused work across crescent (typechecker error reduction + annotation fixes) and normalize (0.4.0 roadmap planning for cross-file name resolution and control-flow graphs), with heavy autonomous agent activity from fuwafuwa. Two major planning sessions anchored the day; parallel agents executed on plan components through evening into 2026-05-09.

Sessions and Activity

crescent (2026-05-08, 19:28–2026-05-09 04:24)

One long session ([2511c02f]) spanning ~9 hours with 12 distinct user turns. The session focused on crescent typechecker error reduction and annotation-position bug fixes.

Core work:

  • Handoff context verified (1744 errors / 1330 warnings across 773 files from previous session)
  • Initiated new planning phase on annotation-comment ordering; discovered a critical regression in collect_preceding_run (commit ed6e2ed made blank/comment lines transparent, causing adjacent annotations to merge incorrectly)
  • Two concrete file repairs identified (env.lua and solve.lua) where function annotations were misattributed across function boundaries due to this regression
  • Planning multiple phases of fixes: linter configurability, lint pre-commit wiring, annotation-position test suite, annotation skipping logic
  • User signaled mid-session a blanket rule: "do NOT fucking build or release until we're sure ALL issues we've found are fixed" (strong scope-lock on stability)

User interaction pattern: Plan-mode openness, then incremental corrections. User requested deeper dives into file-specific error cascades, questioned whether annotation position testing was actually working, and pushed back on partial fixes ("are they failing? do they work now? what next?").

Key moments:

  1. 19:28:58 — Handoff context + planning request (interrupted by tool use)
  2. 19:29:36 — Approved Opus plan mode, confirmed direction
  3. 19:56:28 — User: "feel free to keep going" (extended work window)
  4. 2026-05-09 04:01:27 — User rejoins after night; questions file lib/imap/format.lua difficulty
  5. 04:08:27 — User demands clarity on how "wrong annotation syntax is acceptable"
  6. 04:10:15 — Linter configurability + test coverage request
  7. 04:24:16 — Clarification on test status + linting prerequisites ("no the lint wiring is CRITICAL, BUT all cases must also succeed")

normalize (2026-05-08, 16:27–19:49 + 2026-05-09 04:22–04:24)

Two sessions: primary planning ([6c08dc29], 16:27–19:49) + brief continuation ([032f0153], planned for 2026-05-09).

Session [6c08dc29] (3.2 hours, 10 user turns):

  • Comprehensive 0.4.0 roadmap planning: cross-file name resolution (Phase 0), control-flow graphs (Phase 1), liveness (Phase 2), effects (Phase 3), types (Phase 4), symbol search (Phase 5)
  • Detailed Phase 0 (module resolution) architecture: ModuleResolver trait, per-language impls (Rust seed → TS → Python → Go → JS → Ruby), Datalog rules for resolved_reference/resolved_call, fixture coverage
  • Phase 1 (CFG) architecture: normalize-cfg crate, .cfg.scm per-language queries, Mermaid rendering, ~98-language validation matrix
  • User pushback on scope: questioned why module-resolver seeds wouldn't cover all languages, demanded blockers for 0.4.0 be comprehensive, objected to "decreasing scope" (several times)
  • Late-session tension: user objected to creation of docs/roadmap-0.4.md ("wtf is docs/roadmap-0.4.md") and insisted blockers be stricter

Interaction pattern: Heavy planning direction + iterative scope tightening. User expressed frustration about incomplete product shipping and asked for "clear directions" multiple times. Final turn approved Phase 1 work ("okay. phase 1 time?").

Token usage (primary session):

  • 10 user messages
  • Major plan expansions with high output token counts per turn
  • Heavy cache reuse (plan context carried across long session)

io (2026-05-08, 09:21–09:27)

Brief coordination session ([d54a9d63]):

  • User request to fetch e-books from http://www.sc2.com/e-books/ to /mnt/ssd/books/
  • Started task-based work (task ID b6upaqsi9)
  • Quick scope + execution

Autonomous agents (fuwafuwa)

Heavy fuwafuwa presence: 51+ autonomous sessions recorded for May 8 (running headless, monitoring Discord). Each session oriented, checked messages across channels (#general, #degeneral, #stinky-nerd-channel, #luvoid's, DMs), and responded. Sessions span 23:39 (May 8) through morning (May 9).

Notable pattern: fuwafuwa sessions increased in frequency and volume on May 8, suggesting elevated Discord activity or scheduled check-in intervals. Sessions are brief (mostly 1-5 min per session), low-token-cost autonomous monitoring.

User note to fuwafuwa at 00:37:46 on May 8: "please DO NOT FUCKING BUILD OR RELEASE until we're sure ALL issues we've found are fixed" — echoing the crescent stability mandate to all autonomous agents.

ashwren, hologram

No recorded activity on May 8 (no sessions in data). Hologram resumes activity on May 9 (13+ sessions).

Token Usage Summary

TOTAL54+124+350,000+24,800,000+1,240,000+

Cache efficiency:

  • crescent: ~10M:1 cache_read:output (excellent context reuse on planning session)
  • normalize: ~83:1 (solid, plan context reuse)
  • fuwafuwa: autonomous sessions benefit from prior session context; individual sessions low-cost
  • Overall: very high cache efficiency, indicating strong prompt-caching infrastructure

Observations

  1. Crescent typechecker stabilization is critical path: The "do NOT fucking build or release" mandate signals scope-lock around error fixes before any release. The annotation-ordering regression (commit ed6e2ed) is blocking; fixes to collect_preceding_run are queued but verification is pending (tests B/G/H in annotation-position suite not yet confirmed passing).

  2. Normalize 0.4.0 roadmap is ambitious and contested: User pushed back multiple times on scope — wanted all ~98 languages covered for module resolution from the start, objected to phase-based rollout. Final approval of Phase 1 (CFG) suggests planning is locked, but execution will likely surface scope negotiations again (when builders hit the "remaining 92 languages").

  3. Autonomous agent activity at scale: 50+ fuwafuwa sessions on a single day shows the autonomy infrastructure is working. Low per-session token cost + high-frequency monitoring suggests agent is responsive to Discord activity without blocking user work.

  4. Scope-locking pattern: Both crescent and normalize sessions show a pattern of user expressing strong opinions mid-planning (crescent: "wrong syntax is acceptable?", normalize: "why are you decreasing scope?"). This suggests users are increasingly evaluating agent planning for completeness/consistency, not just trusting the plan.

  5. File-specific error cascades are hard: crescent session surfaced cascading errors in lib/type/static/ files that are difficult to trace. env.lua's misattributed annotations propagate to solve.lua errors. Suggests typechecker architecture (inference + constraint propagation) is sensitive to annotation ordering — a fragility worth addressing structurally.

Projects Touched

  • crescent (Lua typechecker, annotation fixes, error reduction)
  • normalize (0.4.0 roadmap: cross-file resolution + CFG planning)
  • io (e-book fetching infrastructure)
  • fuwafuwa (autonomous Discord monitoring, 50+ sessions)

Next Steps

  1. Crescent: Verify annotation-position tests B/G/H pass; fix collect_preceding_run + test coverage; wire lint pre-commit (Phase 1 of multipart fix)
  2. Normalize: Begin Phase 1 (CFG) implementation — scaffold + Rust query + fixtures. Module-resolver infrastructure (Phase 0) seeds defer to follow-up.
  3. Autonomous agents: Continue high-frequency monitoring; no blockers observed.
