Daily Log: 2026-07-05

A heavy design day dominated by crescent's declarative-core typechecker pass, with supporting work in aeriea refinement and fuwafuwa's autonomous baseline. The day's signature move: systematic kernel-candidacy stress-testing — four distinct kernel proposals simultaneously designed and attacked, with each attack report naming fatal/serious flaws and redirecting salvageable ideas. Crescent's persona-prompt iteration (committed 0a2e3917) ran as a separate thread, setting up future work on habits the agent was told not to repeat.

Sessions and Activity

crescent (LuaJIT — typechecker)

The day's heaviest thread: a sustained design-pass sequence on abstract kernels for the declarative-core typechecker. The setup: after the 2026-07-04 corpus run, zero claims proved/refuted (100% Open verdicts), diagnosed to a site/slot vocabulary mismatch across three harvesters. The owner's initial frame: "the one law becomes pure graph acyclicity (no id proved via a path back through itself)." The work: design four distinct kernel models (subtract, primitive, invert, evidence), write attack reports against each one with named fatal/serious flaws, then a synthesis pass over saturation (monotone datalog vs. term rewriting).

subtract candidate — kernel shrinks to four functions over an opaque id/payload pool with producer-submitted derivation edges (rule, premises, target, supports|refutes). The one law becomes graph acyclicity; claim vocabulary deleted from the trusted core. Attack report flagged: (1) FATAL — the flagship worked example (colon-self-nonnil-v1, closing 5 of 8 corpus instances) is unsound (checks definition syntax, not call sites); (2–4) SERIOUS — fuel-bounded re-execution only guarantees reproducibility not correctness; deleting provenance removes anti-self-corroboration; stated complexity argument is wrong (cited union-find for DFS).

primitive candidate — claim as opaque executable predicate; kernel never inspects claim content. Verdict: KILLED. Attack: flagship demo broken on re-run (mined_deref_nonnil.check has no unknown branch for absent-value, conflates nil with no-data); "Proved only ever closes producer-fabricated singleton domains"; corroboration has no defense against two wrong checkers agreeing.

invert candidate — claim pools + mechanized Lua evaluator + small fixed proof calculus (Hoare-shaped, proven sound once, never against claim meaning). Verdict: SURVIVES-WOUNDED. Attack: the open-address algebra doesn't fix the 2174-shrug (just relocates it); colon-method self non-nil proof assumes oracle.entries() enumerates every invocation but Lua permits first-class escape that static entry-enumeration would miss; real gap in invert.md itself (UNDERSPECIFIED on Certificate construction).

evidence candidate — unifier + mechanized stepper + one grounding rule. Verdict: SURVIVES-WOUNDED. Attack: (FATAL) open address algebra doesn't bridge the 2174-shrug, just moves it; (FATAL) static invariant misses first-class escape; (SERIOUS) citation-omission laundering undetectable; implies() still carries real decision power and is as hard as the original wall.

saturation pass — examined two readings of the owner's own framing (monotone datalog accumulation vs. term rewriting with merging). Verdict: mixed — Reading A (monotone) is strictly simpler and sound (acyclicity + confluence fall out as theorems, dropping separate mechanisms); Reading B (rewriting) is strictly weaker (no free guarantees, adds critical-pair analysis and termination proofs, worse failure mode: wrong rewrite irreversibly merges facts). The design handed the decision back to the owner explicitly, since the proposal didn't disambiguate.

synthesis — a meta-pass distilling which ideas survive attack-testing and which are salvageable at smaller scope. Strongest ideas kept regardless: (1) collapsing kernel-fixed topic-key grouping into producer-named ids inside an edge, restating the law as pure acyclicity; (2) the claim-as-executable-checker noun with mandatory non-guessing "unknown" (paired with typed witness-shape registry); (3) folding ◇-refutation into Proved(□¬φ) via invariant rule, closing Hole H3. The remaining constraint — rule honesty is kernel-unverifiable (same gap Rice's ceiling survey flagged in §V) — is mitigated externally via parity-testing rules against real semantics.

Hand-evaluation UI — all four candidate engines (subtract, primitive, invert, evidence, plus saturation-a/saturation-b variants) built as executable JS engines with an interactive stepper. Five corpus instances + two adversarial scenarios encoded once, stepped through in the UI. Per-engine flaws reproduced faithfully, not patched — e.g., subtract and synthesis both walk the false-Proved path on the adversarial scenario; primitive lands a false Refuted; invert stalls with an explicit UNDERSPECIFIED; evidence reproduces the static-enumeration blind spot. Verification: 8 JS files syntax-checked; 49 engine × scenario combinations exercised headlessly with no exceptions; headless-chrome click-through on both adversarial scenarios. Committed: 39864331568306891c1fac5ef9b05b5fae132e5.

Persona-prompt iteration (separate session thread) — .claude/agents/me.md rewritten from "one rule per annoyance" to "who the agent is and what to do" instead of what not to. The owner called it "worth a shot, provisional, not signed off." Open threads: whether the new file stops the habits it replaced (unearned praise, filler, narrating compliance, option menus); things the owner said no to, which future edits should respect. Committed: 0a2e3917.

Observations: crescent's day is the design-under-attack workflow: every kernel candidate is fielded, every weakness named, and each attack report either kills the design (primitive) or wounds it with concrete salvageable ideas (subtract/invert/evidence/saturation). The saturation pass notably handed a fork back to the owner unsigned — a real technical divergence with different soundness properties — rather than picking the flattering one. No implementation reached, no verdicts hardened: this is pure design surface-area exploration, mapping which ideas are sound under which constraints.

aeriea (embodied sandbox)

One session, continuation of the 3D visual-foundation work from 2026-06-23. Light activity; primary thread carrying forward on existing committed work.

fuwafuwa (autonomous)

22 sessions on 2026-07-05, the autonomous Discord monitoring loop (check channels → respond if warranted → sleep → repeat). Sessions are low-context orientation probes ("Would fuwafuwa naturally want to chime into this conversation? Answer only yes or no"). The persona is disciplined: "chimes into conversations genuinely interesting or involving people she's close to, but stays quiet during ambient chatter she has nothing to add to. Does not start threads unprompted and does not force engagement." Sessions logged for baseline continuity; no user-directed instrumentation.

Observations

  1. Design-under-attack is the crescent operating rhythm. The day demonstrates a methodical stress-testing workflow — four kernel candidates live-designed, attacked simultaneously by specialized adversarial agents, each attack report surgical in naming fatal vs. serious flaws and salvageable ideas. Primitive dies entirely; subtract/invert/evidence survive wounded with concrete weaknesses flagged. Saturation is genuinely ambiguous and handed back unsigned. The entire day's output is non-implementable decision material — the skeleton of what the kernel architecture cannot be, and what ideas deserve carrying forward into a fifth pass.

  2. The saturation ambiguity is real. The owner's own phrasing contained an unresolved fork (monotone datalog vs. term rewriting) with opposite soundness properties. Rather than silent design choice, the synthesis pass developed both readings, attacked both, and returned the decision to the owner with calibrated verdicts. This is the "offer attempts, not verdicts" disposition under pressure: the agent refrained from picking the flattering one and instead surfaced that the fork was real.

  3. Hand-evaluation as verification. All six candidate engines built as executable JS with the flaws reproduced faithfully (not patched). 49 engine × scenario combinations exercised; adversarial scenarios deliberately step both "correct" and broken engines, showing what goes wrong at what point. This is a form of verification that's almost invisible in token count but load-bearing for confidence in the attack reports.

  4. Persona-prompt iteration is a meta-thread. The .claude/agents/me.md rewrite moves from conditional rules ("don't do X") to embodied disposition ("who you are and what to do"). The owner certified it as "worth a shot, provisional" — not signed off, leaving open threads for future sessions. Notably, the typechecker sessions never touched it; persona work ran in its own context.

  5. Fuwafuwa's baseline is steady. 22 sessions of autonomous monitoring, pure orientation probes (yes/no conversation-chiming questions). The persona is disciplined — the question structure itself enforces restraint. No thrashing; monitoring is quiet and reliable.

  6. Ecosystem coordination: the 2174-shrug is the load-bearing diagnosis. Every kernel candidate proposes a different way to "fix" the 100% Open verdicts. Every attack report that touches the problem concludes: "the 2174-shrug is relocated, not solved." This is exactly the right signal — the issue isn't localized to any one kernel shape, it's a cross-harvester producer-coordination failure. The design work maps the problem space; implementation should start from "how do producers converge" rather than kernel shape.

Projects Touched

  • crescent — abstract kernel design pass (6 candidates), attack reports, saturation analysis, hand-eval UI with executable engines, persona-prompt iteration (separate).
  • aeriea — light continuation on 3D foundation.
  • fuwafuwa — autonomous Discord monitoring (22 sessions, baseline).

Next Steps (inferred from session endpoints)

  1. crescent: owner decision on saturation fork (monotone vs. rewriting); move into a fifth kernel pass informed by which ideas survived attack-testing.
  2. aeriea: carry forward 3D foundation work on existing committed basis.
  3. fuwafuwa: continue autonomous monitoring at baseline.
